BUILDING towards an Olympics berth, school teacher Drew Williams taught the Central Queensland running fraternity a lesson with his first half-marathon.

Williams won the CQ Physio Spring Classic half- marathon at Yeppoon's Main Beach on Sunday in 1:16:09.

The move to compete in the half-marathon was part of 24-year-old Williams's push towards an Australian Olympics team place in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 or Tokyo in 2020.

A year six teacher at St Patrick's Emerald, Williams took on his first half-marathon on the recommendation of good friend and 10km race winner Paul Tucker.

Despite the win, he wasn't too happy with his preparation, which wasn't focused on completing a half-marathon.

"It's a long way -- I wasn't really prepared for it," he said. "All my training has been geared towards the shorter distances."

Specialising in the middle-distance track events, Williams was building his training up to be able to compete in the marathon. …
