GIVE OF YOUR TIME AND MONEY TO SCHOOLS

"Sticks and Stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me." Neither will the name of the high school hurt anyone. I'm sure we could pick apart the names of many institutions due to the misdeeds of their namesakes. Instead of stressing about this issue, go over to the school and mentor or tutor some students, donate school supplies, sponsor a sporting event.

DON'T THROW TRASH ALONG ROADWAYS

Regarding the Northwest Jacksonville Blight: Where do all the old washing machines, TVs, other household appliances, yard waste and litter come from? I've lived in Mandarin 35 years and have never seen a washing machine in a ditch. It's not because the city picks them up, it's because we don't throw used appliances and rubbish along our roadways and our drainage ditches.

OBAMACARE DESERVES WHATEVER HAPPENS

I'm not sure what all the big fuss is with Senator Cruz and other tea party Republicans in trying to defund Obamacare. Why not just let Obamacare go through? Then if the predictions that the implementation of Obamacare will be a "train wreck" come true, then surely by the mid-term elections in 2014, the majority of Americans will be fed up with the law and elect a Republican veto proof majority in Congress that will then repeal Obamacare.

CITY TRIES AGAIN WITH HEMMING PLAZA

I sure hope the city gets it right this time when they determine how to improve it and spend a fortune re-doing the Plaza. It will be the third (depending on how you look at the work) or fourth time in 30 years or so. That works out to a lifespan for such great infrastructure work of about 10 years. Don't have the cost info, but expect it would shock you with the low value we keep getting. Sort of like those ridiculous cobblestone areas on Laura Street. …
