Difficult Week for NFL Quarterbacks

The NFL's annual quarterback shuffle is in full swing even though the season is just starting the second quarter.

Four quarterbacks were sidelined from last Sunday to Thursday.

Tennessee's Jake Locker is out 4-6 weeks with a sprained hip and will be replaced by Ryan Fitzpatrick. Tampa Bay released Josh Freeman. And both starters of Thursday night's game went down with injuries. Cleveland's Brian Hoyer (ACL) is done for the season; Buffalo's EJ Manuel (knee) will miss about four weeks.

For Hoyer, it was an especially tough blow to his career. He came off the bench to lead the Browns to two victories after Brandon Weedon suffered a sprained thumb. Now Weedon is back and led the Browns to a victory over Buffalo.

And the Browns, armed with two first-round picks, are likely to go for a quarterback in next year's draft.

In other quarterback developments so far this season, the Jets' Mark Sanchez will reportedly undergo shoulder surgery after losing his job to Geno Smith; Matt Cassel replaced injured Christian Ponder a week ago and led the Vikings to their first victory over Pittsburgh in London; and Oakland's Terrelle Pryor missed last week's game with a concussion.

That's eight of the 32 teams that have already had quarterback issues this year. And it's still early.

FLYNN SPIRALING DOWNWARD

Two years ago, Matt Flynn was backing up Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay and was considered a likely starter with a bright future.

He signed with Seattle as a free agent, but lost the job to Russell Wilson. He was then traded to Oakland, but lost the starting job to Pryor.

Flynn started against Washington last week when Pryor was injured and blew a 14-0 lead. Flynn was sacked seven times, threw a Pick Six and fumbled twice.

The Raiders have demoted him to third team and promoted undrafted rookie Matt McGloin of Penn State to the backup position. …
