A FORMER major who launched a campaign to save a North East battalion is up for a Chronicle award.

Over the past year, former soldiers and their families were joined politicians and supporters in a fresh protest as part of their Chronicle-backed call for ministers to reverse a decision to cut the number of British troops.

The 2nd Battalion the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, which recruits heavily from the North East, is among the regiments to be disbanded as the Army is reduced from 102,000 to 82,000 personnel due to a budget blackhole.

Major Chester Potts, chairman of the Fusiliers' Association Northumberland, launched a petition against the cutbacks - a move that has been supported by thousands of Chronicle readers, Newcastle councillors and North East MPs.

And he is now up for our Armed Forces Champion in this year's Chronicle Community Champion Awards.

Chronicle reporter Kate Proctor, who was made an honorary fusilier, said: "He's led a tireless campaign to bring the cause of the fusiliers to national attention "He's instrumental in organising a march on parliament next week and he truly deserves the award."

Major Potts said it was a great honour to be put forward for the award.

He said: "I'm very flattered and it really is unexpected.

The campaign is a team effort and we have the support of the Army and, more importantly, members of public who've signed the petition."

You have just this week to get your nominations in for this year's awards and this year there are 11 categories to choose from. We need your help to nominate the people who tirelessly support their friends and neighbours and put others before themselves to give them the recognition they deserve.
