'HERB QUEEN' TO TEACH ALL ABOUT THEM

Master Gardener Claudie Speed, aka the "Herb Queen," will conduct a Landscape Matters class on herbs at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Yulee Extension office. Speed has conducted training sessions on culinary herbs and wildflowers since 1998. The class is free. Master Gardeners are on phone duty Fridays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at (904) 491-7340.

SICK INMATES PROMPT ACTION ON BUDGET

Clay County Jail inmates have been sicker than usual. The County Commission at its 2 p.m. Tuesday regular meeting is expected to approve transferring $80,000 from one county Sheriff's Office fund to another to pay for inmate medical costs. Sheriff Rick Beseler recently notified commissioners that inmate medical expenses for this fiscal year already are more than $109,193 higher the previous year. State and federal law requires the county to provide the care. The meeting is at the county Administration Building, 477 Houston St., Green Cove Springs.

NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP SEMIFINALISTS CHOSEN

A dozen St. Johns County high school seniors have qualified as National Merit Scholarship semifinalists. They will be recognized at Tuesday's 6 p.m. School Board meeting at 40 Orange St. in St. Augustine. They are eligible to compete for 8,000 nationwide scholarships. The students are: Margaret May and Carsen Smith from Bartram Trail High School; Allison Davanzo, Hunter Hayes and Connor Michalski from Creekside High School; Jesse Chen, Devon Crawford, Lilian Dove, Farina Khandadia and Madison Stenzel from Allen D.
