cross between Mad Men and Carry on Nurse. Jack Davenport is three parts charm, two parts smarm as white-coated anti-hero Otto, surrounded by comely nurses, vintage cars and dark secrets. This looks like it could be delicious, trashy fun.

Serial box FROM last Sunday all middle-class gatherings, from dinner parties to postwork drinks to picking the kids up from school, became as charged as the gang scenes from West Side Story, as the Downton gang (ITV Player) squared off against the Homeland homies (4oD). Series three of the latter kicked off, wisely, without ex-marine, US senator and possible terrorist Brody, who is on the run since the bombing of Langley, and an increasingly untenable mystery. This leaves his sometime lover, sometime nemesis Carrie (Claire Danes) alone and unmedicated which is where her character functions best at the mercy of Congress and her former colleagues. Gripping, if increasingly daft.

Not as daft as Downton, though, which continued to tiptoe its way through minor social niceties at a glacial pace, occasionally interrupted by someone saying "Well, we ARE in the 1920s now, you know." The shocking rape of Anna was interspliced with a lot of tum-stroking chuntering as servants and masters listened to Dame Nelly Melba (Kiri Te Kanawa) sing.

SEX, sex, sex, sex, sex. It was all over the telly this week. Indeed, if you try to watch all the programmes in this column one after the other you will probably grow hairy palms, go blind and explode. First up, Sex Box (4oD), the flagpole, sorry, flagship programme in Channel 4's Campaign for Real Sex season. Here, your actual un-airbrushed, lumpy, normal couples straight, gay, all ages and abilities copulated inside an opaque box in front of a live studio audience, then talked about it to Mariella Frostrup and a trio of "internationally renowned sex experts". …
