Yaamba Vet Cuts to Chase

VETERAN mower racer Ken Booy cut the field apart at the 2013 interclub state titles on Sunday.

The local Yaamba racer won five of the seven A-grade races and, with the accumulated points, took home the coveted A-grade trophy on his home track.

Qualifying fastest, the 64-year-old and his old, but highly modified, Rover Rancher with a 28HP (810cc) V-Twin Briggs and Stratton engine, proved age is no barrier in the sport, finishing ahead of Sunshine Coast driver Jeff Wehlow, while Wayne McKellor from the Fraser Coast finished third.

Twenty-three competitors, who reached speeds of 85km/h down the home straight, took part in four grades during the two days of mower racing action.

Harry Sanderson, from Bundaberg, took out the top position in the B-grade division, while Yaamba local Dave Andrews finished in second.

Sunshine Coast driver Neil Backman earned the final place on the podium while locals Sean Booy and Russell Smith battled it out for fourth and fifth. …
