FIREFIGHTERS warn worsening weather conditions could spark a horror holiday long weekend.

On Thursday Queensland Fire and Rescue Service crews worked through the night to control a fire that burnt hundreds of hectares off School Rd, Redbank Plains.

QFRS rural operations area director Corey Bock said both wind and heat would build as the weekend progressed.

"It's forecast to be 34 degrees on Sunday and winds from the north-west, so that's hot, dry winds but the wind speed is only 10kmh," Mr Bock said.

"Monday is 37 degrees and west-south-west winds at 29kmh. That pushes it up to the upper end of very high fire danger.

"It could even go to severe; yesterday went up into severe for a couple of hours and it could likely do that on Monday as well.

"Yesterday we had winds at Gatton gusting almost up to 60kmh, a fire on the overpass at Gatton and another one on the Laidley overpass.

"Then we had a 300-500ha fire at School Rd, Redbank Plains so we had crews down there all night. …
