PETROCHEMICAL giant SABIC is more than just a major employer in Teesside's industrial heartland.

As well as providing hundreds of jobs, the company supports projects which have had a positive impact on the local community, including many youngsters. Its efforts have now been recognised with a nomination for an Evening Gazette Community Champion award, run in association with npower.

The company, based at the Wilton Centre, has been nominated in the Community Business Support Champion category by Nicola Waller, who is employed by the University of York and is based at Wilton.

Nicola says she is "lucky enough to have been involved in a number of projects in conjunction with SABIC, all of which have run extremely successfully and with great impact on the lives of local children and young people."

She said: "They demonstrate their incredible commitment to Teesside and engage with their local community in a vast number of ways.

"I am a primary science teacher and I work across the Tees Valley. One of the projects I am involved with is called Children Challenging Industry, which offers specially tailored site visits to 120 local primary school children.

"We are always looking for local companies to be involved in this project. I would say now that SABIC is one of our biggest supporters.

"Every year they offer site visits and loads of hands-on practical work with primary schools across the area.

"They are aiming to show these young children who live on Teesside what these big companies are, what goes on. They provide positive role models.

They change children's very negative misconceptions about industry. "I just think that SABIC have been absolutely fantastic in showing our youngest children what is out there, what types of jobs they can aspire to. …
