IPSWICH Grammar School's First V Basketball team enjoyed a successful Champion Schools Basketball tournament last week winning bronze in what was an outstanding effort.

"These tournaments are never easy," coach Michael Wellings said. "You play seven games in four days, which is almost a whole season, by the end it is a battle of the fittest."

The tournament ran from Thursday to Sunday and comprised of 16 of the best schools in the state competing for the gold medal. IGS won five and lost two on their way to third place.

"It is the best result we have ever had in this tournament," assistant coach Mike Murray said. "We are all so proud of the team."

Along the way to bronze the team had victories over Townsville High Tropics, Saint Columban's, Hillcrest Christian College, BBC and Brisbane State High School.

"It was hard to get motivated for the third place match," captain Matineng Leahy said.

"We were so close to the big one, but to our credit we played our hearts out and got the bronze. …
