Crown Seeks Jail for School Alpaca Killer

ONE of two young men who beat two alpacas "until neither was capable of rising" deserved actual jail time, a prosecutor has submitted in an appeal hearing.

Bellmere's Wayne Charles Hartwig, now 20, was jailed for six months, but released on immediate parole, for the brutal bashing in the Caboolture State High grounds which left one alpaca dead and the other so injured it had to be euthanised.

The Attorney-General sought the sentence review in the Queensland Court of Appeal, arguing the sentence was manifestly inadequate and did not meet community expectations.

Crown prosecutor Michael Byrne said the attack went on for 30 minutes and the men's isolation of the two alpacas showed a degree of deliberation.

Mr Byrne said an intoxicated Hartwig and his juvenile co-offender, a Caboolture 16-year-old, used rocks, a hose and a metal pole to repeatedly beat the animals.

"One of the animals went to rise to its feet but was beaten back to the ground," Mr Byrne said. …
