THE Sands Resort at Yamba has started a new tennis program for the Lower Clarence.

This program runs during holiday period and is open to guests of the resort, as well as people from the community.

Resort owner-managers Stephen and Janette Wright said the program catered for people aged three years and over.

"We are fortunate indeed to have Philip Beckman running the program in Yamba," they said.

"Philip was born and raised in Grafton and played tennis from the age of eight.

"He started teaching tennis at the age of 13, helping his father in Grafton. At the age of 18 he won a tennis scholarship to play in Miami Florida, USA for four years, living there with his uncle, Australian tennis legend Fred Stolle. He practised and played with some of the best players in the world."

He also worked and coached with some of the best coaches in America, spending a year working for John Newcombe at his tennis ranch in New Braunfels, Texas. Philip played pro tournaments all over the world. …
