Nathan Blasts His Rivals on the Sand; Teen Follows Best Mate as Age Champ

HERVEY Bay's little sandstormer Nathan Thomson has swept all in his wake at the Wide Bay Secondary School Surf League.

The junior surf lifesaver, who stands just 157cm tall and weighs 42kg, produced a dazzling display at Nielson Park Beach to be named 13 years boys age champion.

Thomson, 13, finished on the podium in all five events - surf swim, beach sprints, beach flags, board paddling and iron person - to capture the individual crown.

His gold in flags, the penultimate leg of the challenge, was particularly impressive.

Despite giving a height advantage to some of his rivals, Thomson showed a burst of speed and sheer determination, as well as drawing on his rugby league background to snatch the win with a crowd-pleasing dive.

He nominated for the competition as a stepping stone to next year's junior state championships.

No surprise, he was ecstatic with his performance.

"It's a pretty good feeling," he said. …
