NEWLY-crowned Womensport Queensland Sports Woman of the Year Jodie Fields thinks her success shows aspiring athletes from the Darling Downs can achieve their goals.

Australia cricket captain Jodie Fields beat out a strong field of finalists for the Sports Woman of the Year award, including fellow Darling Downs talent and national netball skipper Laura Geitz, for the award which was presented at a gala awards night in Brisbane on Friday.

Other finalists included swimmer Cate Campbell, ironwoman Courtney Hancock, rugby league talent Karyn Murphy and footballer Clare Polkinghorne, who could play for the Brisbane Roar in a trial match in Toowoomba on Saturday.

It was the first time a cricketer has won the award and only the second time an athlete from a team sport has taken out the honour after netballer Vicki Wilson two decades ago.

It was also a good night for Kingaroy's cricket prodigy Holly Ferling, who took out the Junior Sports Woman of the Year award. …
