O'Brien Sneaks Closer in Fairfax

THE race for Fairfax looks set for a recount after LNP candidate Ted O'Brien yesterday whittled away Clive Palmer's lead to just 502 votes.

At last count the Palmer United Party leader was ahead 50.32% to 49.68% after pre-poll vote counts continued to flow Mr O'Brien's way.

With around 6000 pre-poll, postal and absentee votes still to be counted Mr O'Brien is steadily chipping away at Mr Palmer's advantage.

If votes continue to flow at their current rate, the final margin will be around 100 votes.

Mr Palmer stormed into contention with an advertising and press blitz in the final two weeks of the campaign and it appears that has not cut through to constituents casting pre-poll and postal votes.

Mr O'Brien has collected 56.72% of the pre-poll and 62.33% of the postal count.

Mr O'Brien did not return the Daily's calls yesterday, however, his camp is preparing for the contest to go to a recount.

If Mr O'Brien does pip Mr Palmer, the LNP is expecting the PUP will ask for a recount. …
