Business Group Demands Council Loosens the Reins

THE economic blueprint for the next 20 years envisions the Sunshine Coast as a region which is nearly triple its net worth, provides 41,000 new "high-value industry" jobs and has household income levels "above the state average".

The Sunshine Coast Council has revealed its draft Regional Economic Development Strategy for 2013 to 2033.

The Sunshine Coast Chamber of Alliance believes the vision is feasible, but only if the council changes its corporate culture and starts being "open for business".

Alliance deputy chairman and Maroochydore Chamber of Commerce president, Ross Hepworth, said "something has to change within the council bureaucracy" for the region to flourish.

"All the goodwill of councillors and the good work they do is of no value unless the bureaucracy delivers on it," Mr Hepworth said.

"And what we are hear-ing is they just don't."

Mr Hepworth said at every Chamber of Commerce meeting there were "at least three stories of how the bureaucracy in council is making it difficult to deal with". …
