SERENA WILLIAMS is ready to tame "the animal" as she bids to successfully defend her US Open title.

World No1 Williams has been on an amazing run over the past 14 months, with a 77-4 win-loss record as she captured last year's Wimbledon, London Olympic and US Open titles, plus this year's French Open crown.

Two of those defeats came against Victoria Azarenka, in last February's Doha final and last Sunday at the WTA final in Cincinnati by 2-6, 6-2, 7-6. And with Williams and Azarenka having won seven of the past nine Grand Slam, it sets the stage for a potential rematch of last year's US Open final.

Williams is wary of the threat posed by Azarenka. "She is so competitive on the court, like an animal, and I'm the same exact way, like my dad described me as a pitbull," said the American.

Williams is looking for her ninth title of the year but she has proven vulnerable in Grand Slams, losing against compatriot Sloane Stephens in the Australian Open quarter-finals and Germany's Sabine Lisicki in the fourth round at Wimbledon. …
