Keep Eye on Promises of Pay Equity

WELL it's done and dusted, and now we have to live with and keep an eye on what has been promised in the Federal Election.

There will be lots of expert pundits talking about what has to happen to the economy.

Importantly however, for the members of Business & Professional Women (BPW) of Coffs Harbour, we will be watching closely how the government performs in regards to gender and pay equity.

The incoming Coalition Government's policy on paid parental leave has had many comments for and against, particularly as it has been seen to favour the "richer" people in our society.

But as Eva Cox has pointed out, one thing it has done is put the issue on the table that paid parental leave is not about welfare, but about workers' entitlements.

It changes the debate about the rights of both men and women to be in the workforce and not to be disadvantaged financially by wanting to look after their children.

BPW Australia was one of the lead organisations which campaigned for, and was successful, in obtaining a universal paid parental leave scheme in 2011, so we shall be watching closely how the new legislation is enacted. …
