Council's Renewal Vision Is Gathering Pace

Article excerpt

AMBITIOUS plans for regeneration in South Tyneside are gathering pace, with impressive renewal projects reaching completion - and much more to come. A stunning new park is now complete on the Riverside at South Shields, creating a new landmark to greet visitors arriving in the town by ferry.

Jointly funded by the Council and the Homes and Communities Agency, Harton Quays Park stretches along the River Tyne from the ferry landing to the Customs House theatre.

The park features dramatic curved stone embankments, a promenade, lawns and colourful planting. Visitors now enjoy sheltered seating areas and a dramatic 'pine grove' viewing point, its distinctive shape calling to mind the prow of a ship.

An impressive curved ribbon wall, made of 144 precast concrete panels, is another unique feature, while a new amphitheatre will host open air performances of drama and music with a river backdrop. Another Council-led project nearing completion is Haven Point, a PS16m seafront pool and leisure complex which will open its doors later this month. The eyecatching new centre has been built to a high standard, with stunning design and unique artistic features as well as the latest state-of-the-art equipment.

The centre features competition, teaching and leisure pools as well as a gym, sauna, dance studio and visitor centre.

Councillor Iain Malcolm, Leader of South Tyneside Council, said: "The Council has a compelling vision for regeneration, and we are continuing to invest in the future at a time of unprecedented reductions in Government funding.

"It is exciting to see our ambition bearing fruit, bringing jobs and growth to South Tyneside in spite of a tough financial climate. Both Haven Point and Harton Quays Park will be major Tyneside landmarks for years to come, and they are part of a wider vision for the whole borough."

The schemes are the first stages of South Shields 365, a PS100m masterplan to transform the town centre over a five to ten year period.

The scheme, which aims to make the town centre an exciting destination every day of the year, will see leading regeneration specialists Muse Developments working alongside the Council to deliver an ambitious vision for renewal. …
