Out of the shadows

At Byron Bay, Lifeline Northern Rivers' Out of the Shadows and into the Light event will be held on Tuesday from 5pm, meeting at the symbolic Peace Pole near Byron Bay Surf Club.

The Out of the Shadows walk reinforces the key themes surrounding Lifeline's national response to suicide - hope, recover, reflection and prevention.

Out of the Shadows walks are also a time to remember those lost and those bereaved by suicide.

OVER the past decade, the once-taboo topic of suicide has come out of the shadows and into the spotlight, as it impacts more and more Australians.

Governments have acknowledged how serious the issue is, with more Australians under the age of 44 dying by suicide each year than are killed in car crashes or by skin cancer.

In response, health services and crisis support agencies have introduced specialised programs to address suicide.
