A SWOOPING magpie is terrorising an Aroona neighbourhood, targeting mothers as they pick up their children from childcare and residents out shopping.

The Sunshine Coast Council has been called in to assist as the bird isn't just flapping its wings at people in its territory - it has been known to draw blood.

Joan Harm, who lives across the street from the Aroona take-away, uses an umbrella when walking to the shop.

"I have been swooped before and I am not prepared to risk it," Ms Harm said.

"I've seen it draw blood."

Magpies are a protected species. They only swoop during breeding season and all the council can do is advise people of the potential danger.

The child care centre has urged parents to bring umbrellas when picking up their children.

An employee at the centre, who asked not to be named, said the bird swooped randomly at people walking by.

"We have put a sign on our fence to alert people the magpie is nearby. …
