CROSS COUNTRY: For Gympie cross country prodigy Jack Curran, his run at the Australian Cross Country Championships on Saturday didn't go as well as he had hoped.

After a successful performance at the World trials earlier this year where he won, the Gympie 19-year-old was expecting a good result but fell short of a podium finish.

Racing in the U20, 8km course, Curran enjoyed the Launceston venue despite having to deal with muddy conditions and a slow track.

"I didn't have a great run. I was hoping to go much better after posting some great times earlier this year," he said.

"I know I'm fitter and faster than how I raced on Saturday, especially after I had a really good run in July at the Gold Coast where I completed 10km in 30 minutes."

Although he admitted there were some very muddy patches on the course, he said overall it was a great venue.

"I know I struggled along with many others with the muddy patches but it was a pretty fun race overall," he said. …
