CHINESE CHESTNUT A FLORIDA CHAMPION

A large umbrella-shaped Chinese chestnut tree on the Glen St. Mary Nursery was recently named a Florida Champion Tree for its size. The scene of numerous weddings under its canopy, the tree is 53 feet high and has a circumference of 168 inches. The crown spans 92 feet. Glen Nursery owner Lin Taber estimated the tree was planted by his grandfather around 1920. Florida began keeping the Florida Champion Tree Register in 1975 to recognize the largest tree of each species in the state.

BEWARE COUNTERFEIT $100 BILLS

Counterfeit $100 bills recently surfaced in Clay County. The Sheriff's Office has produced a public-service video available on YouTube to raise awareness. On Sept. 28, a phony $100 was passed at the 4486 W. County Road 218 Kangaroo Express. Anyone who has a suspected counterfeit bill can call the Sheriff's Office at (904) 264-6512.

VALLENCOURT IS BUSINESS PERSON OF YEAR

Mike Vallencourt recently was named Business Person of the Year by the Clay County Chamber of Commerce. Vallencourt is president and chief executive officer of Vallencourt Construction Co., which has about 200 employees. He served on the Clay County Utility Authority board for seven years. In 2006 he created the Francis E. and Barbara Vallencourt perpetual scholarship presented annually to the Bishop John J. Snyder High School students for their values and work ethic.

VEHICLES MAY SWITCH TO NATURAL GAS

The county is working on a plan to use natural gas to power 130 of its gasoline-engine vehicles. County staff recently gave a presentation to the County Commission about the Compressed Natural Gas program. The board unanimously approved seeking a $730,000 grant from the North Florida Transportation Planning Organization and begin converting the fleet. …
