Things you didn't know about Janelle Saffin

What do like to do with your spare time?

You are joking, you cannot work as hard as I do and have spare time too! I do love to go to the pictures or movies and read heaps, buying too many books to read in one's lifetime.

Any pet dislikes?

Having demands to make more laws or change laws every time a problem comes up. I prefer to make less laws and work out other solutions, but that tends not to happen in Canberra or Sydney, no matter who is in power. Lies in politics are bad; sure, put your best foot forward, but if you have to lie to win, it raises questions as to someone's character.

Anything else you would like to tell readers about?

I love what I do and thank readers for the privilege they have given me with their vote, so I can work each and every day, doing my bit to make a difference in our community and in people's lives. I have lived and worked in many jobs and other countries where many die from preventable deaths and count my blessings to be born in Australia.

Could you tell us about your family?

My husband Jim, called Dr Jim by all (an academic one), my son and three stepsons, so lots of blokes in my family, and two pampered dogs and two house cats. Two sisters (one who I look very much like and some people say hello to her in the streets here when she visits), one brother and mum and dad are still with us, thank God.

What's your educational background, including primary, secondary and tertiary institutions you attended?

I left school early, at 13, after attending Leichhardt and Girls Central Primary and Bremer and Coorparoo High. Later on I educated myself, first at Ipswich and then Lismore TAFE, followed by attending the Northern Rivers College of Advanced Education (now Southern Cross University) getting a teaching diploma and then a law degree through Macquarie Uni- versity. …
