LEGENDARY charity runner Tony The Fridge is up for a Chronicle award.

Tony Phoenix-Morrison, from Hebburn, South Tyneside, has ran thousands of miles across the country with a 42.5kg fridge strapped to his back for charity.

One of the grandfather's most recent challenges was to complete 40 marathons in as many days travelling from John O'Groats to Land's End to raise money for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.

And now the 49-year-old is in the running for our Champion Fundraiser award in this year's Chronicle Community Champion Awards.

"He's totally selfless and a true local hero," said his friend Matt Norcliffe, who nominated him for the award. "What he has done is inspirational.

"He is a step above your average fundraiser and he has gone to all extremes to raise money for charity. He picked up a broken leg in his last challenge and I didn't hear he complain once - he's a real trooper. …
