In a region loaded with teams owning state championship pedigrees, only two advanced on Monday at the Region 2-2A tournament for the opportunity to win another.

"We knew this region was going to be one of the best in the state when we saw the re-districting last spring," said Bartram Trail coach Pete Peaver. "You just knew that a good team with the potential to be top-10 in the state tournament was going to miss out."

That team was Peaver's, despite having the tournament medalist in Jordan Batchelor with a 71 at the Plantation at Ponte Vedra Beach. Bartram Trail finished third, as Ponte Vedra (299) and Bolles (305) notched the two team qualifying spots for the 2A state tournament Oct. 29-30 at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills.

Taylor Funk of the Sharks tied Batchelor with a 71, and lost a card match for medalist. Tom Burnett added a 72.

Jack Comstock led Bolles with a 74, while Michael Mattiace and Graham Nichols each shot 75.

How stacked was this region? In addition to the Bears, past state champions since 2007 who were in the new grouping were Bolles (2011) and Nease (2007). The region also included Bishop Kenny, an annual region contender.

Ponte Vedra coach Pete Molinari said his players were looking forward to the test, with Bolles added to the mix. …
