A FAMILY dispute reached a head yesterday when a 25-year-old man was sentenced to six months jail after he went bush with his one-year-old child at Bouldercombe.

The Rockhampton Magistrates Court court was told during an argument this week he punched his partner, called her several derogatory names and threatened to kill himself, her and the children.

The prosecution said he also tried to find a machete underneath the youngest child's bed before taking the child into nearby bushland, while the mother and two older children were locked in a bedroom.

When confronted by police there was a short negotiation before he handed the child over, but then pulled police to the ground on two occasions while handcuffed.

However, the defendant disputed the facts, admitting that although he punched his partner, he never threatened to kill anyone, including himself.

His lawyer Brendan Ryan said he was trying to pack clothes for the child, not looking for a machete, and rather than running off with the youngest child, he had only taken them 100m down a path to sit by a creek where he was found by police with the child. …
