PM Says He's Here to Listen to Region

HE BARELY had time to kick a footy before being whisked away.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd yesterday made a flying stopover in Mackay to spruik the government's achievements in the region since being elected in 2007.

Mr Rudd made no new announcements, relying instead on past investment in the Bruce Highway to act as a counterbalance to Opposition Leader Tony Abbott's commitment of $6.7billion for the troubled road if elected.

"What I know about the good people of Mackay and the good people of Queensland is they prefer to see a record of action rather than a pile of rhetoric," Mr Rudd said.

During the rushed media conference, Mr Rudd used examples including the $50million upgrade to Mackay's southern approach on the Bruce Hwy to back up the government's record.

"We have invested $5.8billion in the Bruce Hwy, four times more than occurred under the Howard Government."
