Baby's Death Sets Man off on Destructive Crime Spree

THE death of his baby at birth caused one 23-year-old man to go off the rails, sending him on a criminal rampage.

Appearing via video link from prison this week, Victorian man Drew John Smith pleaded guilty to 18 charges, ranging from fraud to wilful damage plus a range of traffic offences in the Warwick Magistrates Court.

His partner sobbed in the gallery of the courtroom and Smith wiped tears from his eyes as police prosecutor Ken Wiggan relayed Smiths offences to the court.

At 4.30am on April 14 this year, Smith set the front fence of a Brisbane home on fire, only for it to spread and destroy three cars, a trampoline and to later leave the fence in ruins.

At 9.30am Smith was clocked doing 72kmh in a 60kmh zone in Toowoomba and failed to stop twice at the direction of police.

Fifty minutes later, Warwick police attempted to intercept Smith on Wood St, but again he sped off, swerving into oncoming traffic.

After avoiding police for another leg of his journey, Smith was clocked doing 182kmh in a 100kmh zone at Yelarbon at about 1pm. …
