Linked Blazes Lit in Vacant Buildings

FIREFIGHTERS' chief Paul Evans believes a number of blazes in Toowoomba's centre and south have been lit by the same person.

Inspector Evans, who is the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service area commander for Toowoomba operations, said nine fires had been set in similar style buildings since the start of the year.

He said all of the timber buildings, with the exception of a solicitors' office, had been vacant.

Some of the buildings had had multiple fires.

The most recent call out was in the early hours of Sunday morning to a fire in a vacant Ruthven St home near the intersection of Alderley St.

Upon investigating that blaze, firefighters found evidence of small fires in the vacant building next door as well as the former Marco Polo Chinese restaurant.

He said it was difficult to determine when the two unreported fires had been lit.

Other factors linking the fires included the way in which they had been lit and their occurrence in buildings which were mostly being considered for redevelopment. …
