Newly Elected Cricket Presidents Keen to Get Ball Rolling on Plan to Boost Competition

THE new president of the Clarence Ricker Cricket Association will look to changes to the format of the night cricket competition to boost flagging fortunes of the sport locally.

Tom Kroehnert took over the CRCA reins when elected to the job at the association annual meeting at the Grafton District Services Club last Thursday.

Kroehnert, who captains South Services in the Premier League competition, said he will discuss introducing the popular Twenty20 format into the night competition this year.

But it will have to wait until Christmas as the only ground with adequate lights, McKittrick Park will be out of action while the Clarence Valley Council re-lays the wicket square.

"The popularity of cricket has been on a bit of downward spiral for quite a while," Kroehnert said.

"Twenty20 has been a popular format for getting people interested in the game. Hopefully we can get a bit of a flow on from that into the Saturday competition."

Kroehnert said none of his ideas had been ratified yet but they will be up for discussion at CRCA meetings ahead of the 2013-14 season. …
