WITH perfume, tea towels, jewellery, soaps, festive mugs, chocolates and bottles of wine on offer, who wouldn't want to celebrate Christmas twice a year?

Thursday was Christmas in July again and the gift-giving was in full swing at the Lismore Senior Citizens Social Club.

"If you buy the tickets, you're allowed to win a prize," announced club president Trish Wales over the loudspeaker.

Then it was time for lunch: with roast chicken and pork, baked vegies and plum pudding custard and cream for dessert. No one was left without a satisfied grin.

"We've worked really hard to make this a really good Christmas in July this year," Ms Wales said. "We want to meet people, build a friendly atmosphere, and have a bit of fun."

The club headquarters at the Laurie Allan Centre (at the river end of Magellan St) is turning into a hive of activity for seniors after a few slower years. …
