Hammering out a Career

Article excerpt

WIDE Bay Institute of TAFE (WBIT) has added another feather to its cap with the announcement that one of their Vocational, Educational and Training (VET) students has been selected as the winner of the Master Builders Burnett Wide Bay 2013 Housing & Construction Awards Apprentice of the Year.

Stevie Ruhle, 20 years old, works as an apprentice carpenter with WIN Constructions. Her love of building started when she completed a Doorway 2 Construction VET program with the WBIT while she was a Year 12 student at Aldridge High School.

"I was working part-time at a pharmacy when I started my Certificate 1 in Construction at the WBIT and I really liked it," Stevie said.

"Once I completed the Certificate 1, I knew I wanted a career in the building industry and was given the chance with an apprenticeship with Win Constructions.

"Since then I have been doing all of my block training here at the Maryborough Campus of WBIT and I couldn't be happier.

"I enjoy working on the job but when I am doing my block training the teachers have time to answer any questions that I may have and they spend a lot of one-on-one time with each of the apprentices."

Stevie credits her win to the support of her not only her colleagues and bosses at Win Constructions but to the staff at WBIT.

"I'm thankful for all the support of my teachers, workmates and colleagues," she said.

"I couldn't believe I won the award, I never thought I'd win an anything like that."

Win Constructions owner Glen Winney praised his young worker.

"She's got a bright future ahead of her," he said.

Mr Winney said Stevie had worked on the projects that have helped shape the region including the new Maryborough Aquatic Centre (itself an award winner on the night).

WBIT senior training officer Andrew Dower said he knew how Stevie felt. …
