Soup Kitchen Launches a Venture - Boatbuilding

A PROJECT initiated by the Lismore Soup Kitchen is not just helping to get residents at the Winsome Hotel back on their feet; it's helping them to walk on water!

Rob and Paul have been living at the Winsome's "transitional" accommodation for one year and three years respectively. Each is handy with tools and has been doing general maintenance work around the majestic old pub for some time.

But when the old horse stables were cleaned out earlier this year they saw an opportunity to convert it into a proper work shed where they could let their imaginations run wild.

With the help of St Vincent de Paul, the business community and Soup Kitchen benefactors Ridley and Meike Bell, they have been able to "tool up" and in the past couple of months they have been building a prototype kayak.

The frame was made from recycled timber and covered with a tarpaulin. A few weeks ago they put it on the water with a volunteer (Da Tone) sitting in it and it floated. …
