"WHEN my baby, when my baby smiles at me I go to Rio ... de Janeiro, my oh, me oh".

I couldn't shake the lyrics of Peter Allen's hit I Go to Rio out of my head.

I even started to mime shaking maracas and wondered where on earth my Hawaiian shirt was.

I remember the hours upon hours I listened to that song when I was about 12 in the lead-up to our school's Rock Pop Mime performance.

I remember the girl who was to play Peter Allen didn't turn up to rehearsal one day so I was her understudy.

And boy did I put on a flamboyant show -- one Peter Allen would enjoy.

I put my feet on top of the piano while I pretended to play the keys.

And I danced like no one was watching.

I recall the teacher in charge saying I was the perfect Peter. …
