Black Boy Is a Bit Grey

THE average lifespan of a horse is about 25 years so Black Boy, who turns 40 today, is positively ancient.

Today - August 1 - is the day horses in Australia celebrate their birthday.

Black Boy's owners, Neil and Gracie Denison of Pimlico, got him when he was just six years old.

"We bought him and another horse from a Bangalow farmer 34 years ago," Mr Denison said.

"The horses were for our children.

"We were founding members of the Ballina Equestrian Club, so Blackie was part of that, and then we were involved with the Alstonville Pony Club.

"He has been ridden a lot over the years.

"He's the last of our four horses. I don't know of any other horses this old around here."

Mrs Denison said despite Black Boy's age, he was in relatively good health.

He enjoys roaming in his paddock and eating his special food, which he needs because he doesn't have too many teeth left. …
