I DON'T know if you've noticed, but there's been an epidemic appearing our TV screens. It's called reality TV. I do enjoy the somewhat guilty pleasure of these shows because there is some educational value to be found, especially in the area of marketing. Let me explain:

1. Stories sell.

The singer who is doing it for his dying grandma who raised him from age 3 will always get a better response than the spoilt teenager who has a lifetime of singing lessons and an attitude. Your business needs to be able to tell a story which resonates with your a[approximately]viewers'. After all, people vote with their wallets.

2. If it works, stick with it.

As a business owner, have you ever tried to dream up a new and exciting idea to promote your business?

Stop for a moment and consider renovation shows and cooking shows. At their basic level, is there really any difference other than the channel they're shown on? …
