Council's Cyclist Training Signs Reheat Road Anger

NEW designated "cyclist training route" road signs erected on dangerous Sunshine Coast roads are fuelling the rift between cyclists and motorists.

Sunshine Coast Council erected the yellow road signs four weeks ago on 14 popular cycle routes with a "history of conflicts with drivers".

The routes have "undulating terrain and poor facilities for cyclists in the form of wide shoulders", which is why the council decided to display the signs.

But instead of creating peace and making the roads safer, motorists argue it has become worse.

Doonan resident Peter Brady, who has seen the sign on the narrow and dangerous Wust Rd near his home, says the sign will give cyclists "greater confidence in using these roads".

"Our observation is these roads are being used for training by groups of cyclists," Mr Brady said.

"This creates a very significant hazard.

"It is a very steep road, when cyclists go up they go less than walking speed. …
