Birth Centre Helps Ease Fears of First-Time Mums; Midwives and Setting Provide Reassurance

LANTERN lights hang above the double bed with the frangipani bedspread.

On the wall there is an inspirational poster and in the corner a yellow inflatable fitness ball.

Sitting on the bed is Lara Payne, nursing her four-week-old baby Flynn. They look right at home, that is until you realise they are in a hospital.

The Mackay Birth Centre, which turns 20 next year, is located at the Mackay Base Hospital and specialises in a holistic approach to giving birth.

As part of the hospital's redevelopment, the Birth Centre will expand from two to four rooms and will be ready in July next year.

And even though the temporary room is inside the hospital, it still feels like a bedroom you would find at home.

Mrs Payne said the easiest part of having a baby was the labour rather than bringing home a newborn.

She said her experience at the birth centre was an awesome experience.

"I found when I told people I was pregnant, all these horrific horror stories came out about how painful it was, how scary it was and the pain was so terrible.

"With the care from the birth centre they provided me with lot of information and that knowledge became a powerful tool for me to prepare for my birth.

"Part of what made it a great experience was we got to know the midwives here, we trusted them and they had our best interests at heart.

"I was drug-free during the birth," Mrs Payne said.

Fellow first-time mum Rachael Caskie gave birth to her son Noah in the water.

"I got to scoop him up out of the water and hold him in my arms straight away. Being the first person to touch him and hold him was beautiful.

"It was a very memorable time and a wonderful start on my mothering journey".

Mrs Caskie said she had a few options on how she wanted to give birth but found the natural home environment of the birth centre both private and comforting. …
