Heartbreak for Gin Gin Stalwart as Avondale Reigns

AVONDALE'S 44-36 win over Gin Gin in the elimination final of the Northern Districts Rugby League was described as the grand final that should have been after 80 minutes of tough, uncompromising football.

For the winners a date has been set with Miriam Vale in the preliminary final after the Magpies were defeated 34-28 by Agnes Water in another entertaining game.

Avondale coach Mick O'Sullivan praised numerous players, with Matt Ross's two tries and Daniel Steemson's work rate earning special mention.

But for Gin Gin it was another tale of heartbreak with one of the club's most loyal supporters feeling the loss the most.

As well as playing for Gin Gin -- firstly in the Bundaberg competition during 1957 -- club president Doug Simonsen has been around ever since and he said this season was better than 2012 but he wanted more.

"We have a good club and 2012 was humiliating, but sooner or later the wheel turned around. But it didn't turn fast enough for us," Simonsen said. …
