TO paint or not to paint -- that is the question. Interior painting can often be a job best left to the professionals, but for those who are considering a do-it-yourself (DIY) paint job, here are a few tips to consider.

Gladstone Wholesale Paint Group marine and protective coatings specialist Paul Weeks said he started in the paint industry in the late 80s.

When it comes to DIY paint projects for house interiors, Mr Weeks recommends two top quality brands -- Wattle ID and Rockcote EcoStyle.

Both paints have a low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC), so there is no smell.

"You can paint today and put your kids to sleep at night," Mr Weeks said.

The paint expert said about 4L of paint should cover a standard-size bedroom.

To paint the interior of a standard-size house (four bedroom, two bathroom), Mr Weeks said about 40L was needed, depending on the doors and windows.

For those looking at a cheaper brand of paint, the Bristol range by Taubmans can be effective and can cost about $120 for a 15L drum for ceiling white paint. …
