THE federal seat of Richmond used to be a bastion of political conservatism held by Country Party/National Party members from 1922 to 1990, including three generations of Anthonys.

But the 2768sq km seat, which spans the north-east of NSW including Tweed Heads through to Ballina, Nimbin and rural parts of the Lismore local government area, in the past 40 years has become increasingly urbanised and coastal, resulting in a shift to Labor.

The main electorate centres include Tweed Heads, Kingscliff, Murwillumbah, Bangalow, Brunswick Heads, Byron Bay, Lennox Head, Mullumbimby, Nimbin, Ocean Shores, Pottsville and Suffolk Park.

New arrivals to the seat have included a large contingent of low-income retirees looking to soak up the sun and relaxed beach lifestyle in their golden years, and it has among the highest numbers of caravan residents in the country.
