WE just can't seem to put them away.

The number of Mackay drivers being booked for using their phones has jumped -- up by about 65 compared to the same period last year.

Mackay Police crime prevention unit Senior Sergeant Nigel Dalton has been discussing the dangers of overuse of technology with cyber safety expert Brad Huddleston.

Mr Huddleston said nomophobia -- the fear of being without your phone -- was on the rise.

The disorder is often joked about to describe teenagers' obsession with their mobiles, but Mr Huddleston said it was a very real psychological condition that was affecting a range of age groups.

Snr Sgt Dalton has since researched whether that addiction to smart phones has rippled through to people using Mackay's roads. …
