Mitchell Case Bad for All Our Police; FEEDBACK

I WOULD like to respond to the letter from your correspondent N Stead of Whitley Bay on the subject of the Andrew Mitchell MP affair.

Whether or not Mr Mitchell is an arrogant individual, as your correspondent suggests, is a matter of opinion. What is not a matter of opinion is that, in relation to this affair, rank and file police oficers lied thereby besmirching the name of all such officers throughout the country who will, by some, be tarred with the same brush.

It is also not a matter of opinion but rather a matter of fact that senior officials of the police trade union also lied as they, as have other trade unions before them, sought to interfere with, or even bring down, an elected government of what to them is of the wrong persuasion.

It is also a matter of fact that the Chief Constables of the forces of which these senior union officials are members have concluded that disciplinary action against them is not necessary.

These Chief Constables need to be reminded that when these officers lied about the content of their meeting with Mr Mitchell they were acting as officials of a trade uniuon and not as police officers and that it is,therefore,the CPS and not these Chief Constables who ought to decide whether action is necessary. …
