Boss Gus Puts the Brakes on Loans

GUS Poyet admits Sunderland cannot afford to let any more players leave on loan as injuries and suspensions begin to bite.

Poyet sanctioned the loans of midfielder David Vaughan to Nottingham Forest and striker Connor Wickham to Sheffield Wednesday last week.

But with Lee Cattermole and Andrea Dossena then picking up three-match bans in last weekend's defeat at Hull, while Ondrej Celustka hobbled off with an injury in the midweek Capital One Cup win over Southampton, Poyet will not risk leaving himself short by allowing any more departures.

"It's going to be more difficult (to let anyone else go) for sure," he said.

"But we've got plenty of bodies and the international break is coming up, so we'll manage."

England Under-21 star Wickham joined Sunderland from Ipswich in an PS8m deal two years ago, but has made just nine top-flight starts since.

Poyet acknowledges that Wickham's Premier League move possibly came too soon and likens the situation to that of Wilfried Zaha following his move from Crystal Palace to Manchester United. …
