Mugger Left Girlfriend to Follow His Victim

A mugger jailed for robbing a woman in the early hours had been cuddling his girlfriend on a street corner when he spotted her.

The woman, 37, told police that she was drunk after a family night out in Stockton when James Campbell left his girlfriend to follow her.

A group of lads nearby on the High Street shouted across "smackhead", and she walked towards them, but Campbell, 26, said "They're talking about me".

Prosecutor Sue Jacobs told Teesside Crown Court that he grabbed the woman by the arm and he would not let go.

He swore at her and then he grabbed her bag and he ran off.

She said later in a Victim Impact statement: "I was frightened for my life.

"I thought I was going to be raped or hit. I would be reluctant to walk alone at night in the future."

She suffered a swollen knee and large bruises to her upper arm, and she was seen by her GP.

The encounter was recorded on town centre CCTV, and Campbell was recognised from it and arrested. …
