BOB PAISLEY looked like your favourite uncle, all round-faced with slicked back hair, comfy cardigan and homely voice.

However, the same guy was the most successful club manager in the history of football.

Uncle Bob, from Hettonle-Hole, won a mind-boggling 20 trophies in nine years on behalf of Liverpool as the succ1essor to the flamboyant Bill Shankly. His haul was bigger than that scooped by the Great Train Robbers - three European Cups, one UEFA Cup, one UEFA Super Cup, six League Championships, three League Cups, and six Charity Shields.

At the time (as now) Newcastle United were winning nowt so it was decided I should try to discover the secrets of success by going down to see Paisley, a man of our soil, on Merseyside. Bob agreed and I spent three fascinating days with him in the famous Anfield bootroom and manager's office. It was also a great opportunity to meet up again with old pals - Terry McDermott, Graeme Souness who I had got to know at Middlesbroughand Geordies Ray Kennedy and David Hodgson. …
