SEVENTY-YEAR-OLD William Modrow has escaped the wrath of death three times.

He had a triple bypass at 60, contracted severe pneumonia a few weeks ago and, just on Tuesday, nearly drowned in the Burnett River when his boat capsized.

But he's still alive to tell the tale.

Mr Modrow snuck out onto the water for a day of fishing alone -- against the constant wishes of his children -- when a gust of wind overturned the boat.

The grandfather of eight, who cannot swim, was flung out of the boat into the river, 30m from the shore.

"It was just one of those freak things," he said.

"This is the first time in my life that I've had a boating accident."

By a stroke of luck, a team of council Parks and Gardens workers were patrolling the usually deserted area of Queens Park when they spotted the boat and yelled out to the fisherman and asked if he was alright.

"I said, 'no, I can't swim'," Mr Modrow said. …
