Kayakers Soldiering on with Tough Charity Challenge

IT IS one of the toughest group charity challenges ever attempted in Australia.

Paddling up to 10 hours a day in kayaks in their goal to reach Brisbane next week, current and former Australian Defence Force personnel this week stopped over in Woolgoolga.

The inaugural Mates4Mates Sea Kayak Adventure Challenge started in Sydney on Saturday, October 19, and is a gruelling 1000km challenge across 21 days.

Funds raised will assist wounded and ill defence personnel rebuild their life skills and emotional resilience.

Some of the participants have already been through the unthinkable on the front line.

Sapper Curtis McGrath lost both legs when he stepped on a landmine while clearing a checkpoint in Afghanistan last year.

He spent months training

for the epic paddle.

"I don't look at it as 1000km," Curtis said.

"I'm just taking it as 50km a day and it doesn't sound too bad."

Curtis said the challenge was a once in a lifetime opportunity and important to his recovery. …
