PEOPLE MAKE THE NEWS - NORTHERN RIVERS - The President, Cr W J Thompson, and Cr D Day were yesterday appointed delegates of Maclean Shire Council to the Industrial Development Conference to be held in Grafton under the sponsorship of the Grafton City Council with the co-operation of the Clarence Regional Development Committee.

AMUSING - Comment was passed at the Maclean Shire Council of some work being carried out on the Pacific Highway which one councillor described as "amusing".

Another said at Cowper a remark had been passed that it took nine men to look at a hole. Cr O Ryan had asked why the Department of Main Roads had taken over the work on highways previously carried out by shires. The president Cr W J Thompson said it was a matter of government policy.

STOPPAGE THREAT IN SUGAR INDUSTRY - The sugar industry on the NSW Northern Rivers is threatened with a stoppage unless field and mill workers' demands for prosperity loadings are met by late this afternoon. …
